John Gledson “I have the greatest respect for Mark Carlyon as a translator. His enthusiasm in bringing Brazilian classics into English, and the care that he has given to his versions of the works of João do Rio, Manuel Antônio de Almeida and Machado de Assis are admirable. His translation of Machado de Assis’s relatively unknown short novel, Casa Velha/ The Old House is confident and accurate, and is a wonderful addition to the works of the author already available in English. Machado is not easy to translate, and requires sensitivity and knowledge of the author and his environment.”
